An amud a day, even on the front line
Eight in the evening at Camp Ofer, outside Ramallah. The patrols are back, and in the base beit midrash 40 Border Police fighters open the same page of Gemara, each with a chavruta. For the next hour, the hour belongs to the daf.
Avnet is the Haredi company of the Israel Border Police. Its fighters hold a live operational sector in the Jerusalem area while keeping a fully Haredi way of life. Holding a sector is all consuming, and Torah learning in uniform tends to shrink to whatever a soldier can grab between shifts. Sayeret Avnet was created to change that.
A fixed pace.
One amud a day, five evenings a week, from eight to nine. Ten avreichim come in from outside the base especially for the hour and sit in chavruta with the fighters. For every six fighters, a sayeret commander tracks attendance, understanding, and review, and reports to the rabbis each week.
A chevra, not just a class.
Every two weeks the learning pauses for a gibush evening, with prizes for the outstanding learners. That is what turns a study hour into a brotherhood. At this pace the company finishes a masechta every few months, and a fighter who learns throughout his service leaves the army with a shelf of completed tractates behind him.
Sponsor a month of learning. 25,000 shekels keeps Sayeret Avnet running for a month: 15,000 for the ten avreichim, and 10,000 for two gibush evenings with prizes. Contact us to learn more.
